What is Ophthalmology?

This branch of medicine specializes in the function and diseases of the eye. It is concerned with: Eye
  • Prevention of Blindness.
  • Treatment of disorders, e.g. Glaucoma.
  • Surgery, including Cataract.
  • Removal and Corneal Transplantation.

Optometry is concerned with correcting visual abnormalities (e.g. Near Sightedness and Far Sightedness) and the prescription of corrective lenses, including Contact Lenses.

Many advances in the treatment have been made in the recent years in the field of ophthalmology to the extent that there are now specialists for a particular area of the eye.

Use of lasers has revolutionized the treatment of eye disorders notably the use of laser therapy in patients whose eyes have been affected by diabetes. Lasers are increasingly being used in the correction of refractive errors of the eye.

Lot of advances have also been made on the biomedical front such as the use of soft contact lenses to correct refractive errors of the eye.
