Goals of Occupational Therapist


Reduction of limitations * Improvement of muscle strength and endurance. * Desensitization of painful areas which have resulted from nerve damage. * Development of behavioral skills needed to manage the effects of mental and emotional illness.

Development of self-care skills Mobility – using artificial limbs, braces, wheelchairs and other adaptive equipment. Hand activities – using keys, telephones, opening doors and drawers. Homemaking – practice in a model kitchen or flat to use labor saving devices and special adaptations.

Maintenance of maximum physical function and social ability Proper body positioning while lifting objects, bending. Body mechanics – flexibility and mobility. Planning skills – Group dynamics, leisure activities, building morale and social skills.

Preparation for employment * Testing to determine the individual’s interests, abilities and skills. * Job counseling.
